Images used on the spreads

page spread version 1

For the 6 coIome spread choose to use a full-bleed image on the splash. The images I choose are of immigrants fleeing on to the beach to safety. I think this image set the tone for what the article is about. I choose to place all the text on the left side of the pages. On reflection, the color chosen didn’t work well with the images, and you lose the curving beach element. I choose to have a black background with the body text in a bright yellow for my turn pages. I choose to use quite large images, which at the time I thought was a good idea. However, the turn page I thought still had a lot of work to do to it as there were loads of problems.

For my 11 colome splash page, I choose to have my title in a vertical layout. I choose to put the title in black as it gives it a solid look to the typeface. I placed the stand first between the 400 and migrants as I felt it work well in
the structure and built a strong layout. I used a full bleed for the picture of immigrants on a boat crossing the channel. I choose this images as I felt it was very biromantic and related to the subject quite a lot. For my turn pages, I choose to have large scale images along side having the text in black boxes with the text being white. I choose to place the pull quotes in black text drops as I felt it would help them stand out. I found on feedback had a clumsy aspect to it. This coming from the black text boxes and the uses of imagery.

page spread version 2

For my 6 column splash page, I started by changing the text’s layout from the previous spread. I began with the header by spreading it across the pages and increasing the 400 and migrants’ size. I also added a snippet from the article to give the reader a feel for it. I drop the black text box and change the text’s color to black from yellow as it sits better on the page and is more verbal. I also try to get the balance right in the images, so I didn’t lose any of the key details, like the beach’s curving. For the turn page, I started by getting rid of the black background as it just didn’t work with the images and the text. I then move to look at the text’s text color back to black from yellow as it wasn’t obvious to the eye. I also drop the size of the images to created balances on the layout. I also added a chart on the immigrant cherishes alongside some text.

For my second take on my splash page, I choose to change the title’s placing and put it in a blue to help it stand out. I choose to keep the stand first on
the left pages to spread the content across the page. I added a snippet of the opening paragraph to the spread to give the reader a taste of what to come. I also played around with the placing of the images. As I found on the past spread, I found you lost the dynamic of the center folded images, losing people’s facial expression, which sets the tone of the article. For the second take on the turn pages, I choose to drop the images’ size to create more space for the text and try and create a bit of balance in the spread. I added the pull quotes to full spaces. I choose to add the shade of blue I used for the title. To create a style and to help them stand out. I also added some different images to make the page spread up. I choose to drop the black text boxes on feedback; they may look clumsy and very rough.

Final 6/11 page spread

For my final 6 colome splash page spread, I found quite a lot had to change with things like the header and the stand first. I started by shorting the title down as it was too long didn’t quite relate to making sense to others. I also change the color of it from a bright yellow to a light orange. I also added a question mark to pose the question on illegal immigrants. I also added the credits of the words and photos to the people as I thought it would add a little detail to the page. I also shortened the stand first down, so it didn’t take up loads of room on the pages. I feel the layout works better as one piece with me changing the header and the stand first. I also think the new header is more relatable with the page images. For my turn page, I started by addressing the body text problems from previous page spreads. I started by lowering the type size to 8 points from 11 point type, which was too large. Then added a paragraph styling to it, which drastically improved it. I also added 10 points leading to the text. I then
move to look at the placement of the pull quotes and images. I choose to drop one of the pull quotes from the previous layout. I change the color to light oranges, which I think works better than bright yellow as it was more visible on the pages. I also moved the place of then as I had then placed on my images, which didn’t work cause it didn’t sit right on the image when looking at then. I choose to change some of the images I was using as I felt they were all relatively the same, so I added large portrait images to change it up. I also added a slogan in the corn of the layout that is to catch the reader’s eye.

I started my 11 colome final splash spread by looking at the placement of the content on the layout. I choose to put the header in an italic font, which links the images and header. I then moved onto shorten the stand first down, so it didn't give the impression it was the opening of the article. I also added the credit of the words and photos to the pages to add that little detail. I started by looking at the layout and how I content was placed on my final turn page. I then moved on to short my body text out. I put it in a paragraph style, a 1mm indent at the start. I also drop the size of type down 10 points to 8 point type alongside adding 10 points of leading as it was still on auto leading. I then moved onto look at images I was using to create white space on my layout. I also found it created a nice balance on the pages as it wasn’t overcrowded. I choose to drop one of my pull quotes from previous layouts as it overcrowded the page and wasn’t really needed. I also added a short article on the immigrant rate coming across the channel, which I think added to the spread.
